Here are five DIY tips you can do around the house that will help you keep your house warmer and in turn, lower your heating bill.

1. Weatherstripping -- Have drafty windows or doors? Weatherstripping your doorjambs and window gaps will keep heat in and the cold outside. The process is simple, and it's cheap.
2. Door Sweeps -- Similar to weatherstripping, door sweeps prevent heat from escaping underneath doors and prevent cold air from coming in. These sweeps seal gaps at the bottom of the doors. A door snake, which can be made or bought, can also be used.
3. Insulation -- The two most common places in your home that heat leaks out of and cold air comes in are your attic and basement. Basements are notorious for allowing cold air in as cracked foundations, gaps or cables entering your house are exposed. Spray foam insulation is a great way to prevent cold air from rushing in. Your attic is also important as heat rises, and if not properly insulated, heat will escape through gaps in the attic floor or ceiling.
4. Check your furnace -- In the Winter time, your furnace is your best friend. Like every appliance in your home, your furnace needs routine maintenance or checkups. Get your HVAC System checked twice annually, once int he Spring and once in the fall, to see if any issues are occurring. A simple tune up and cleaning can dramatically increase performance, extend the life of your equipment and save you money as well. Even the simple maintenance of replacing filters can help save a few dollars here and there.
5. Change your Thermostat -- Simple thermostats do not do a very good job of regulating the heat in your home. Smart thermostats allow you to save money on your utility bills by sensing your absence or programming them while you're away to regulate heat (and air conditioning during the summer) to adjust temperatures and save you money. Many of these thermostats, like Google Nest, have smart phone capabilities and allow you to change the temperature within apps.
