Natural light. You can’t beat it. When the sun is out and your home is flooded with natural light, you feel better about the world. Life seems brighter. If you think back to the time when you were looking to purchase a home, maybe even the one you’re in now, one of the considerations was natural light. Most homeowners want a brighter home and one of the best ways to get that is from natural light. But as night follows day, the sun sets in the west and your natural light is gone. You now have to rely on your home’s ability to light itself. If you are in the process of remodeling or thinking about remodeling here are some lighting ideas to light up your life.
Whenever Artisan Construction has the opportunity to remodel a family or living room we pay attention to all the details and lighting is one of them. We install multiple light switches all around the room. We know (even if they don’t know) that a homeowner will want to be able to control the lighting in the room no matter where they are. It never makes sense to have a homeowner only be able to turn the lights off at one end of the room and have to cross the room in the dark. You usually don’t think about how the placement of the light switches can make a difference in how you live at night.
Installing as many can lights as possible brightens up a bathroom. You’ll be amazed at the difference that shaving and putting on make-up in a well lit room can make. Can lights are in addition to any primary pendant or sconce lighting that you place around sinks and mirrors.
The kitchen is an excellent place to showcase the creativity and usability of lighting such as can lighting, task lighting and countertop lighting. The kitchen is the room that usually has the best natural light and the room that needs the most additional electrical lighting of any room in the home. Installing more can lights in the kitchen with multiple switches that control the under mounted, cabinet lighting and countertop lighting will be an added functionality that you will appreciate later. These lighting additions will warm the kitchen at night as a dimmer switch will control how much light you want or need at the time. Use the lighting to highlight your beautiful new countertops. Your cabinets will look amazing basking in the warm glow of a dimmed can light. Let’s not forget about how much easier it is to cook in a well lit kitchen!
One of the places we add extra electrical outlets during a remodel is in the closet. You store your Swiffers and hand vacuums in the closet; why not charge them where you store them? When painting a home or working on the exterior add more electrical outlets around the perimeter of your home. These extra outlets make adding decorative lighting or putting Christmas lights where you want them easier.
If you like to use your outdoor grill a lot, consider running a gas line to your grill. If you have a propane grill, you’ll have to convert it or buy a natural gas grill. One of the obvious benefits is you’ll never gun out of gas in the middle of cooking your steaks again!
Natural light is the best lighting you can get, but when the sun goes down, or there are places in your home that are dark due to design, there are many lighting options to choose from so you never have to be in the dark!

Lighting is by far one of the most important things in a home that real estate customers are looking for. Not all homes have enough natural light due to many factors, so the correct added lighting is so important. I love these tips and especially recommend planning your lighting design out before you start remodeling. Smart!
