You've been in your home for about 10 years now, or you just moved in and you knew that you wanted to remodel the kitchen in your house. You have a budget and you've selected a contractor who is very familiar with the building codes in your area and came highly recommended. You evaluated their website and from what you've read, the way they work with their clients and the way you like to work with vendors seems like a good match. So what’s the next step?

Planning and Communication

The best way to start with your kitchen remodel is to make a list of what you want to be able to do or what challenges you wish to eliminate with the new kitchen remodel.

Space Requirements

Consider the number of people you want to be able to cook for or have space for a table large enough to them. Do you want to be able to fill a pasta pot with water and not have to drag it across the room when it’s full? How about the kids? Do you want them to have access to cabinets or drawers? How about the microwave? All these appliances can be placed at a lower vantage point to little ones can have access to them or placed higher in the kitchen so they cannot. Do you want a casual breakfast bar for them to sit at? What about light? Do you prefer a lot of natural light or even more light? Do you want the space to look amazing at night? Consider the walking or working path way in the kitchen. If possible, make sure there is enough space for 2 people to be cooking in the kitchen at the same time.

Finishes

When designing your kitchen think about your finishes. Granite is a popular choice for counter tops but it also soaks in food which can lead to orders and needs to be maintained and resealed. Depending on your budget think explore some of these other options:

• Stainless Steel : Stainless Steel Counter tops are great because they are easy to clean, which prevents bacteria . This makes stainless the cleanest counter top around.
• Glass : Can be cut in any shape and stained in any color. Sleek, modern and durable.
• Concrete: Can be formed in any shape, texture and color. It is an excellent choice as it mixes with other materials such as glass, ceramic, wood or stainless steel.

It might be easier to design a kitchen or any other space in your house, that solely reflects your tastes and needs  but consider this. How long do you plan on being in your home? If you plan on selling it in the next 5 years, you may want to lean more toward current or future trends as that will make it more attractive to future buyers.

A kitchen remodel can always be a good thing for the cook in the house and it will make your home more sale able in the future, if that’s what you are planning on doing. Make sure that you plan your kitchen remodel and execute it with professionals. There is nothing worse than trying to do a project yourself that you don’t have the skill lever for. A home buyer is not going to pay for bad workmanship.
